Positions in this class are characterized by their responsibility for performing basic diagnostic, treatment, and supportive services in the care and treatment of patients as a member of a primary health care team. Incumbents receive technical direction on medical procedures from a physician, who accepts full responsibility for the health care of the patient when determining diagnosis and therapeutic treatment. The class is distinguished from Nurse Practitioner/Senior Nurse Practitioner in that a California Registered Nurse license is not required; however, incumbents must be licensed to practice as a Physician Assistant by the Physician Assistant Board of the Medical Board of California.
